Modern Foreign Languages

MFL Salut Overview 2018-19

French is taught up to year 5 and Spanish in year 6, this comprises speaking, listening, reading and writing. Teaching includes the use of playing games, singing songs, watching DVD clips of French children modelling the language, grammar exercises, speaking and listening exercises, role play, use of ICT and exploring the culture of French-speaking countries. From the beginning we introduce basic grammar and encourage children to recognise the key features and patterns of the language and how to build sentences using structures and familiar language they have learnt. We are keen to encourage the children to enjoy their French lessons and to be confident to have a go at speaking, reading and writing the language.

In line with the national curriculum for languages we aim to ensure that pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of spoken sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity and finding ways of communicating what they want to say through discussion and asking questions
  • can write a simple text using a variety of grammatical structures they have learnt
  • are able to describe people, places, things and actions orally and in writing    MFL
