At Oxhey Wood, children are encouraged to express their feelings, energy and ideas through art and design, and are given opportunities to develop their ideas and skills through a broad range of experiences.

Art and Design begins in Reception as children experience the Foundation Curriculum. Creative opportunities offer the children a variety of multi-sensory experiences to explore a wide range of materials and techniques as they begin to express their ideas and feelings.

During Key Stage 1 children have further opportunities to develop their creativity and imagination by exploring the visual, tactile and sensory qualities of materials and their processes. They learn about the role of art, craft and design in their environment and begin to understand colour, shape and space and pattern.

At Key Stage 2 children further develop their creativity and imagination through more complex activities. These help to build on their skills and improve their control of materials, tools and techniques. They have an awareness of the roles and purpose of art, craft and design in different times and cultures and become more confident in using a wider range of materials and processes to communicate their ideas and feelings.
